This first complete publication of the surviving letters between O'Keeffe and Pollitzer, her friend and first informal agent, will interest scholars and those familiar with O'Keeffe's life and work. Most letters date from June 1915 through September 1917. O'Keeffe's correspondence meanders around the trivia of daily life, such as teaching art classes in South Carolina and Texas, practicing the violin, reading books, talks with her friend Arthur McMahon--and persuading Pollitzer to run errands for her in New York. She exults over the Texas landscape, but her statements on her work are more often studied demurral than informative assessment; "My things--well--I just think Illsic not make anymore--they are awful--but I know I will make more--tosic much a fool to stop sic." Here, too, is Alfred Stieglitz's famous first view of O'Keeffe's work ("Finally a woman on paper"p. 109 ) and the artist's increasing contact with Stieglitz and gradual exclusion of Pollitzer. Giboire edited Pollitzer's memoir of O'Keeffe, A Woman on Paper. Line drawings by both women, published for the first time, illustrate the letters.

If you only acquaintance with snaps in sewing are those little, hard to sew two piece snaps, this book will open your eyes to what a heavier duty 4 piece snap can do for your sewing projects.

Former library copy with usual markings. Good, clean condition. Somewhat dated (1980's...but the 80's are back, aren't they???) but still many useful and very creative ideas. Reader review:This book is well worth the money. It contains a lot of creative tips with many entertaining illustrations so that you may not ever have to buy a "maternity wardrobe", even if you work in an office.The author is a model, and I would say that many of the ideas look best on a tall person, but even so, there are ideas for some clothing items to make that anyone could use, pregnant or not. This would be a really good book for someone losing weight and being "in between" wardrobes as well, as she has some good ideas for thrift store finds, and making do with what you already have.Some reviewers say the fashion ideas are dated, but hey, if disco can come back, anything can. None of her fashion ideas are dated, in my opinion--different people can carry off different outfits. You don't have to use a satin sheet, there are lots of nice fabrics to choose from to make the pouf dress. This book is worth buying, simply for the creative ideas. Not everybody can get by at work in oversized jeans.

An expos‚ of the Old Master laundering and antiquities smuggling that hide like pentimenti underneath the prestigious Sotheby's image--a story recently reported on 60 Minutes. Watson's revelatory investigations arrive opportunely, as the big auction houses are enjoying record sales and dodging government inquiries in both America and England. Sotheby's set itself up for whistle-blowing in 1989 when they laid off James Hodges, a not-too honest administrator in their London antiquities department. After Sotheby's later accused him of theft, forgery, and embezzlement, he went to Watson with three suitcases full of papers he'd accumulated over his tenure there, which showed his former employer to be deeply involved in questionable, if not outright criminal, behavior. In 1991 a jury found Hodges guilty of theft (a missing ancient helmet and bowl were in his possession), but he had provided Watson with a well-documented glimpse of Sotheby's shadier business dealings. The company did not simply fail to examine dealers' credentials and titles of ownership, but actually colluded in the act of smuggling paintings from Italy, pottery from Greece, and statuary from India, actions requiring false identities, secret bank accounts, tax evasion, and bribery. Watson went on to considerably broaden the scope of his investigation. Like his The Caravaggio Conspiracy (1985), this book includes episodes that seem to come right out of a Frederick Forsyth plot, such as Watson's participation in a nighttime police raid on Italian tomb robbers and his assumption of a false identity to probe a Delhi ``dealer.'' His piŠce de r‚sistance details an elaborate sting in which he and some partners purchased an Old Master painting in Italy and presented it to Sotheby's there for sale. The house, deciding that the painting would fetch more at an auction in London, colluded, Watson claims, in moving the work illegally out of Italy.
