3 Andrew Weil M.D. Eight Weeks to Optimum Health (Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Body's Natural Healing Power)
Knopf 1997-03-04 0679447156 / 9780679447153 Hardcover Used: Very Good Hardcover
"Health," Dr. Andrew Weil writes, "is a dynamic and temporary state of equilibrium destined to break down as conditions change." In other words, there's no such thing as the type of health that allows you to feel equally great every day of your life. Instead, Weil suggests, your goal should be to improve your resilience to disease, and while you're at it, feel more joy and strength. As to how you should gain this strength, joy, and resilience, Weil doesn't come on with a hard sell to give up every bad habit or all of the foods you enjoy. Instead, he suggests gradual changes: clean your pantry of whatever cooking oils you have there, except olive oil; start taking vitamin C three times a day; walk a few minutes a day; eat some fish and broccoli. The program is so simple and sensible that anyone trying it probably will feel better in a week. The program then gets progressively more involved--more supplements; more of a shift toward a diet based on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; more exercise. Besides these steady changes, each week's program has a focus: In week 2, you start drinking bottled or filtered water; week 3 focuses on organic produce; week 4, on sleep; week 5, using a steam bath or sauna; week 6, trying a "universal tonic" like ginseng; week 7, volunteering in your community; and finally, in week 8, figuring out how to integrate permanently the elements of the program into your life. Even those who don't go for the entire program will probably find something here to like--the recipes, maybe, or the suggestion that you cut back on strenuous types of exercise like running and competitive sports in favor of brisk walks. It's perfectly useful either way: as a total lifestyle overhaul, or a series of suggestions, any one or two of which will probably help you feel better.

7 Barbara Moe Everything You Need to Know About PMS (Need to Know Library)
Rosen Publishing Group 1995-05 0823918777 / 9780823918775 Library Binding Used: Good Library Binding
Former library copy with usual markings. Good, clean condition. Gr 5 Up--Two books that have up-to-date information covering the emotional, cognitive, and physical aspects of PMS and living with relatives. Moe's language is clear and approachable, and the text proceeds from defining PMS and reproductive health to recognizing and treating the symptoms of this bonafide physical condition. A good deal of discussion focuses on the emotional impact of it. Grandparents is a well-formulated guide to understanding some of the reasons why a young person may need to live with relatives, potential lifestyle differences, coping mechanisms, abuse and neglect, and the legal process involved in guardianship and adoption. Simpson devotes a good deal of space to affirming the emotional strain and confusion that can arise during a difficult change. Again, the language is accessible and clear. Black-and-white and full-color photographs support both texts. Interviews with teens dealing with either topic make the narratives more immediate. Overall, both titles provide informative, comforting advice and common-sense answers.Joan Soulliere, Wenham Public Library, MA

8 Bihova BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Scribner 1987-03-24 089256282X / 9780892562824 Board book Used: Good Board book
Bihova, a dermatologist, and Schrader ( No More Wrinkles offer women wide-ranging but cursory beauty advice that runs the gamut from moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, acne treatments, hair dyes and artificial nails to the havoc that pregnancy or drug abuse can wreak on one's looks. The authors recommend specific products by brand name as well as procedures (self-treatment of plantar warts) and appliances (an electric battery device, available with a prescription, which purportedly inhibits perspiration) that may be news to consumers. Bihova and Schrader generally alert readers regarding potentially allergenic and dangerous treatments, but women should exercise caution and skepticism before they sample questionable tips like receiving silicone injections to replace deteriorated subcutaneous tissue or relieving insect bites with a coat of nail polish. And instructions for applying cosmetics are minimally effective sans illustrations.

13 Carolyn Md Runowitz; Jeanne Md Petrick; Ted Md Gansler American Cancer Society: Women and Cancer: A Thorough and Compassionate Resource for Patients and Their Families (American Cancer Society)
Villard 1999-01-26 0679778144 / 9780679778141 Paperback Used: Good Paperback
Former library book in good, clean condition. From Kirkus ReviewsConcise, thorough and up-to-date, this American Cancer Society guide offers concrete help to women who have been diagnosed with cancer of the reproductive system. Runowicz (a gynecologic oncologist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City), Petrek (a breast cancer specialist at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Hospital, also in New York), and Gansler (director of health content at the ACS) have a wealth of information and experience to impartthey have arranged it so that women suffering from the first shock of diagnosis and their supporters can find the specifics on their situation, easily absorb the information, and make a plan on how to proceed. The guide, divided into four sections, covers the female organs where most cancers occur (breast, cervix, uterus, and ovaries). For each, the authors explain normal structure and function, detail how cancer occurs, describe in detail diagnosis, testing and staging of the disease, and then treatment. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are still the standards of treatment; hormone therapies relatively new to the arsenal are discussed here, along with realistic information on side effects. Throughout, the language is understandable without oversimplification, the tone is matter-of-fact. An invaluable resources list points readers in the best direction for research into individual situationsfrom medical options (including front-line experimental possibilities) to daily support. This is the best type of self-help: sound information as a starting point for seeking treatment. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. Book DescriptionFrom America's leading cancer authority comes a patient's advocacy book for women with breast cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer--and their families--that offers medical ex-pertise, practical advice, and emotional support.Breast, cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers are the four most common cancers among women, with over 254,000 newly diagnosed cases in 1998. Recognizing that the survival rate is significantly higher when these diseases are detected early and treated appropriately, the American Cancer Society, the nation's leader in cancer research, education, and rehabilitation, and Dr. Carolyn D. Runowicz, Dr. Jeanne A. Petrek, and Dr. Ted S. Gansler, three of America's preeminent experts on breast, cervical, endo-metrial, and ovarian cancer and cancer education, have come together to write the most comprehensive resource for patients and their families to turn to. This book contains the most up-to-date information about these related diseases, from step-by-step advice about what to do when confronted with a diagnosis of one of these cancers to the latest medical facts, treatments, and procedures. Women and Cancer provides patients with the latest information about the risks and benefits of new drug therapies, radiation, and surgical procedures. But, most important, this book approaches the topic from the patient's perspective, providing psychological and emotional support throughout. Comprehensive and compassionate, with patient stories and anecdotes women will relate to and feel comfortable with, Women and Cancer addresses the full range of issues that women cancer patients and their families may face.

18 Covert Bailey The New Fit or Fat
Houghton Mifflin (P) 1991-08 0395585643 / 9780395585641 Paperback Used: Very Good Paperback
Reader review:Covert Bailey does an excellent job of explaining why fat people can eat LESS than their thin spouses and STILL gain weight. They need to reset their bodies metabolism. In a clear, witty and honest approach, Covert Bailey explains how we fat people go about getting back in shape and changing our bodies to burn fat more efficiently. Covert Bailey also gives the hard facts behind his advice so readers can understand why "diets" don't work and why excercise is the key. Also provided is ample scientific data (in plain language) which supports Covert's method of smart excercise. HE also explains why simply going out and excercising too much is counter productive. I recommend this book to every one who needs to loose weight or loves someone who needs to loose weight. Its time to dispell the myth that fat people are simply lazy people, and Covert's book goes a long way towards doing that.

19 Dave Dravecky; Jan Dravecky; Ken Gire When You Can't Come Back
Harpercollins 1992-09 0310585600 / 9780310585602 Hardcover Used: Good Hardcover
Small tears top edge of jacket. Clean and tightly bound book; excellent reading copy. Dravecky was an outstanding baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants when life threw him a curve ball. As recounted in his previous book, Comeback ( LJ 5/1/90), he was diagnosed with cancer at the height of his pitching career. Dravecky recovered and briefly returned to Major League ball in 1989. Soon, however, cancer claimed his pitching arm, and ultimately his arm and shoulder were removed. His account shares the struggles he and his wife Jan experience as they deal with cancer and its power to reshape their lives. The Draveckys, both devout Christians, write of their worry, pain, depression, faith, and joy. Life demands much of its participants, and there is a message in this book for all.- Lois F.
